Concentration in CBMB

The Concentration in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (CBMB) is for biology, chemistry, or other science or engineering majors who wish to emphasize molecular, biochemical, and/or biotechnology issues. CBMB offers students undergraduate research opportunities in these areas of concentration. This option does not change credit hours needed for BS/BA in biology or the BS/BA chemistry degrees. However, it specifies that 14 credit hours of the following courses be taken as part of the student’s major or elective options:

Math through Calculus II (6 credits)

Biology:

• BI 101 General Biology I with lab (4 credits)
• BI 205 Genetics with lab (4 credits)
• BI 302 Cell Biology with lab (4 credits)

Chemistry:  General Chemistry through Organic Chemistry II and

• CH 321 Structural Biochemistry (3 credits)
• CH 322 Metabolic Biochemistry (3 credits)
• CH-323 Biochemistry Laboratory (1.5 credits)

Advanced concentration elective:

• BI-430 Molecular Biology (3 credits) OR
• CH-301 Physical Chemistry (3 credits)

Capstone Research Experience:  Two semesters (4 credits minimum) of research experience in an approved area of chemistry or biology which may include thesis research, independent research, summer research, or a combination thereof.

Seminar Series:  Participation the Biological Chemistry and molecular biology seminar series is expected.
