Editors’ Note
The Sounding Brass is VMI’s cadet-run, annual literary magazine in which creative writing, art, and photography are published. All submissions are drawn from the Corps of Cadets, thus affording many aspiring writers and artists with an opportunity for publication. Many of the great writers we grew up studying in school got their start in small literary magazines. It is my profound hope that one of the writers featured within this magazine will someday be among their ranks.
This year was a great year for submissions and my only regret is that we did not have the room to publish more of the submitted work. Contributors came from liberal arts majors as well as science and engineering majors. Every class in Barracks is represented in the publication as are a variety of subjects and themes ranging from war to love. Where The Bomb shows the physical reality of cadets’ lives, the Sounding Brass is the expression of all that we think and feel that does not show through in portraits or candid photographs. In that way, I think The Sounding Brass identifies and defines the VMI student body better than any other publication and therefore is incredibly important.
It is with great pleasure that I present to you the haven of creativity, sentiment, and spirit at VMI, and ultimately the true looking-glass into our, the Corps’, inner-selves.
