The verb SER
The infinitive SER means TO BE. However, Spanish divides the use of the verb TO BE into at least a dozen categories. Therefore, it is very important to memorize these uses. Overall, the verb SER is used to describe construction materials, one's identity, calendar information, as well as clock information.

Creation materials are the resources that objects are made of, for example, "The bracelet is gold" and "The table is [made of] marble". Calendar and clock information are very forthright, meaning that that they spell out the day, date, and the hour. For example, in the phrase "Today is Friday, September 8" you would use the verb SER, just as you would in the phrase "It is 10:00 in the morning" or "The game is at the stadium".

The concept of identity is larger and encompasses qualities such as national origin or ethnicity (Tammy is Swedish); profession (Julie is a computer programmer); physical description (Bob is tall); personality traits (Mike is funny); any descriptive adjective to give a well rounded look at what this person is like as a person , such as "My grandmother is old". If you can say that someone is a __________ "person" then SER should be your verb of choice.

The verb SER conjugates as follows:

1st person sg: Yo SOY
2nd person sg: Tú ERES
3rd person sg él, ella, Usted ES

1st person pl. nosotros SOMOS
2nd person pl: vosotros SOIS
