An article is a word that accompanies a noun and that is placed in front of the noun. Spanish has two types of articles. The definite article translates as "the" because it refers to a specific noun that the speaker has in mind, such as "the boy". On the other hand the indefinite article translates as "a" or "an" because the speaker is referring to the noun in a more abstract way. For example, "a boy" (any old boy) is more vague than "the boy" . In the plural forms indefinite articles translate as "some". The four indefinite articles (two in the singular and two in the plural) are: un, una, unos and unas. Un refers to masculine singular nouns and means a or an. Una refers to feminine singular nouns and also translates as a or an. Unos refers to masculine plural nouns and translates as some. Unas refers to feminine plural noun and translates as some. Examples: Un chico=a boy unos chicos=some boys Una chica=a girl unas chicas= some girls In the practice exercise select the appropriate indirect article for each noun. Keep number and gender of the noun in mind. If you do not know the gender, search it in a dictionary. |
