The first thing to remember about direct objects is that they answer the questions "What?" or "whom?" For example: I see the dog. Question: What do I see? Answer: The dog. Therefore, the dog is the direct object. At times the speaker may wish to avoid redundancies in the form of repetition of the same word, thus he/she uses direct object pronouns, that is, words that stand in place of the direct object. For example, instead of saying "I see the dog", one could say "I see it" or "I see him". The direct object pronouns are as follows: Me Nos Te Os Lo Los La Las Placement of pronouns: Direct object pronouns work exactly as reflexive pronouns. They always come in front of a single-word conjugated verb and in front of the perfect tenses. Examples: 1. Estudio el espanol. El espanol is the direct object. The pronoun is lo. Place lo in front of the verb and you have "Lo estudio"= "I study it. 2. He estudiado el espanol. Lo he estudiado= I have studied it. In the exercise that follows, remove the direct object and replace it with the appropriate pronoun. Watch number and gender!! |
