There are various ways in Spanish to express an action in the past. This exercise treats the simple past, i.e. a verb that is a one-word verb, is already completed, and took place only once. For example, "I speak" is the present tense. "I spoke" is the past tense. Frequently the past tense is also called the preterit. Again, the action is complete and happened only once. To conjugate regular AR verbs in the past drop the AR from the infinitive and you are left with HABL, for example. Add the following endings to the stem: é, aste, ó, amos, astéis, and aron. For example, HABLAR in the preterit conjugates as follows: Hablé-I spoke Hablaste-You spoke Habló-He,she, you (formal) spoke Hablamos-We spoke Hablastéis-You all spoke Hablaron-They spoke In the exercise that follows, conjugate the AR verbs in the past tense for the subjects provided. |
