Bruce Vandervort earned a Ph.D. in Modern European History from the University of Virginia in 1989. He teaches courses at VMI on World Civilization, the Renaissance and Reformation, the French Revolution and Napoleon, Modern France and the French Empire, and Africa in Modern Times. Vandervort’s areas of specialization are modern French history (post-1789), the history of imperialism, and the history of colonial warfare. He has published book length studies of Victor Griffuelhes and French Syndicalism, 1895-1922 (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 1996), Wars of Imperial Conquest in Africa, 1830-1914 (London & Bloomington: University College Press London & Indiana University Press, 1998), and Indian Wars of Mexico, Canada and the United States, 1812-1900 (London: Routledge, 2006). Other publications include “Colonial Wars, 1815-1960,” in Jeremy Black (ed.), European Warfare, 1815-2000 (Houndmills, Basingstoke, U.K.: Palgrave, 2002) and “War in the Non-European World,” in Matthew Hughes & William J. Philpott (eds.), Palgrave Advances in Modern Military History (Houndmills, Basingstoke, U.K.: Palgrave Macmillan, 2006).  Vandervort also edits The Journal of Military History, which is produced at VMI for the Society for Military History with support from VMI and the George C. Marshall Foundation."
