Activities for 2007-2008

The Timmins-Gentry Music Society is both a social and an educational club that promotes the understanding and appreciation of classical music. It was founded in 1951 and is named in honor of John Timmins, VMI Class of '49, a lover of classical music who died in Korea in 1950, and Professor Emeritus Tom Gentry, VMI Class of '44, who was its faculty adviser and guiding spirit for 47 years. The Annual TGMS New York Trip

This year's trip to New York, which will take place March 6-9. At the Metropolitan Opera, we will hear Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes. The New York Philharmonic concert will feature a performance by soprano Audra McDonald. They will perform the Symphony No. 48, Maria Theresia by Haydn, "Folk Songs" by Luciano Berio, and the Symphony No. 4 by Beethoven.

While in New York, you are required to see a musical or play and to spend at least one hour in a museum of your choice. For information on what plays are in New York, go to Playbill Online. Musical Activities:

Attendance at VMI concerts and at one performance in the W&L Concert Guild series is required of every cadet going to New York. Concert Guild tickets are paid for with Society dues, supplemented by the Timmins Fund. All members are particularly encouraged to attend the VMI concerts, which are free. Other concerts are sometimes listed here as potential TGMS field trips.

VMI: Wednesday, September 12, 2007: Kandinsky Trio will perform the Trio in C Major, Hob. XV: No. 27, by Haydn, the Trio in D Major, Op. 70, No. 1, by Beethoven, and the Trio G Minor, Op. 15, by Smetana.

W&L: Tuesday, October 9, 2007: Marc-André Hamelin will perform a program of piano music by Haydn, Chopin, and Debussy.

VMI: Wednesday, November 14, 2007: The Audubon String Quartet will perform the String Quartet No. 1 ("American Dreams") by Peter Schickele, the Italian Serenade in G major by Hugo Wolf, and the String Quartet in C minor (Op. 51, No. 1) by Johannes Brahms.

VMI: Wednesday, January 30, 2008: The Baltimore Consort will perform "Adew Dundee," a program of early and traditional music of Scotland.

W&L: Tuesday, February 10, 2008: The King's Singers will perform a variety of vocal music from the Middle Ages to the present.

VMI: March 12, 2008: The Garth Newel Piano Quartet will perform Mozart's Piano Quartet in G minor (K. 478), Gernot Wolfgang's Metamorphosis (for piano quartet), and Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet in E flat (Op. 47).
