PROFESSION

Civil Engineering is a dynamic profession with a monumental history and a limitless future. Civil engineers build and maintain the INFRASTRUCTURE of a nation to improve the quality of life of its citizens.

CE specialties include structures, environmental, geotechnical (soils and foundations), water resources, transportation, construction, and urban/community planning.

Many civil engineers work for government agencies, from federal to local level. Others work in the manufacturing, engineering, and consulting fields. CEs are found in the field, in offices, in laboratories, and in classrooms.

A 1999 survey of VMI graduates from the Classes of 1973 through 1998 revealed that 40 percent hold advanced degrees; 40 percent are registered Professional Engineers in one or more state; about 20 percent work for government agencies; and 18 percent are active duty military officers.

A VMI civil engineering graduate of the Class of 1969, General Robert B.Flowers, was recently appointed Chief of Engineers of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
